Damn the Defiant! review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 2 August 2015 05:02 (A review of Damn the Defiant!)

Nice carácter and acting duel by Guinness and Bogarde, Bogarde using Guinness´s son as a weapon. Regular action and pattriotism in extremis by Quayle and his men a bit corny. Good Murray Melvin as a false but noble gentleman.

Dark Waters (1944) review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 28 July 2015 03:34 (A review of Dark Waters (1944))

De Toth, as good as he could be. A terrorific atmolsphere, with swamp and mistery, with noirish feeling (even Elisha Cook is here) and a well constructed sense of fear inside and outside pretty Merle.

Till the End of Time review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 28 July 2015 03:31 (A review of Till the End of Time)

Simple and pefect exposure of a personal and familiar drama inside a bigger social one: demovilization after WW II. Madison's character is moving trying to tell and shout his war stories to a mother that doesn´t want to hear. McGuire as a nonsense girl is ok. I prefer Mitchum selfdestructive tahn solid. It has a sexy look on handsome Guy.

The Room Upstairs review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 28 July 2015 03:26 (A review of The Room Upstairs)

A surprise.Dietrich is excellent falling in love and hating the world around Gabin. She is subversive. D'YD, his uncle, is superb in his miserable philosophy. Herrand,, the consul,ok in his despair to Gabin. I love Margo Lion, Gabin´s sister, changin the hour in the clock to find an alibi.

Shalako review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 28 July 2015 03:21 (A review of Shalako)

Too frivolous, not just the plot (a hunting team causes an indian war)but the treatment, the spirit. A pitty, becuase Dmytrick is ok and the screenplay have enough action. BB is pure sexyness.

Oh! What a Lovely War review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 28 July 2015 03:17 (A review of Oh! What a Lovely War)

The Smiths lack presence to become the narrative chain. The cameos by the stars eat the film; too monochord, specially the musical.

Don Quixote review

Just an approximation, the copy is badly rescued, a lot of scenes and connecting shots are missing. Too many archive marerial that seems more a light rtrip to spain than a deep and modern look in Cervantes.

Smilin' Through review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 18 July 2015 11:37 (A review of Smilin' Through)

Shearer is great, silent or talkative, as is here. Too long sequences of reiterative dialogue, but actors made them palatable. March is better when angrier, and Howard when gayer.

Tovarich review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 18 July 2015 11:34 (A review of Tovarich)

Not sure why I dislike it: maybe because it has a lubitschean premise, but it is serious in its appraisal of zarist nobility. Boyer and Claudette sparkles for nothing, Isabel Jeans is miscast in a role for a more mature actress.

The Lacemaker review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 18 July 2015 11:25 (A review of The Lacemaker)

Big surprise. delicat et potente a la fois. Just Isabelle approaching, tiny and fragile, in the hospital aisle, is worth the film. You see a simple romance turning in a tragedy.
